Excerpt from In Will's Room
Will was sleeping in his room with his girlfriend, their faces close to
the floor on the thinness of a single matress, hands trailing over the
edge, fingers dipping to the coldness of the bare floor. It was night,
she crept up through the darkness of the house for him and while his parents
slept, cocooned in the new addition, they sighed and touched in this
attic room. Will's animals, the elk, the bear, the eagle and the fox, looked
down from the slanting ceiling, crouched in their leafy squares, their
edges ruffled by the layers of warm air that live under the roof, always
softening, always cooling, always descending. Before they slept, Will explained
to her each book, each coverlet, the ancient camera, the handful of brown
clay that holds the touch of his seven-year old fingers,
hardened now, the edges chipped. In a soft voice, he named them for her
and set them aside.
