Roderick McClain: When I started working with the essay, I was working with Times New Roman on regular paper. I couldn't make the text interact with graphics in a way that felt organic. A few months before the project I found a bunch of yellowed, heavy paper on the side of the road. Reams and reams. I did away with printed matter, opting to draw the whole essay instead. Solved the problem of text-graphic agreement and put to use some fallen trees. I used a quill pen and ink, sometimes a brush, sometimes a knife.

Josh MacIvor-Andersen: "How to Talk Up Gravity and Take Down a Tree" seemed perfect for illustrations. Lots of wild scenes and unusual images. Rod and I wanted the text to sort of "interact" with his drawings, so we finally just illustrated the entire essay, text and all. We drank India pale ale to celebrate its completion.
