John J. Donovan, Crisis in Technology: The Solution, Strategic Weapons and Tactics for Executives, Handbook for Implemeting Strategic Advantage through Technology, Cambridge Technology Group, 1990 THE PRELIMINARY SYSTEM ARCHITECTURE Complex strategic applications can't be thrown together. They require a carefully thought out structure, or architecture. That's true while using the SURROUND™ approach as well, but there's a twist that eliminates the considerable task of designing and building a custom architecture. The SURROUND™ approach uses a "prefabricated," generic strategic application architecture, called the Preliminary System Architecture. Just as with a prefabricated home, all that remains to be done with the Preliminary System Architecture is to customize it and add the trim.
