ANYTHING IS BEAUTIFUL IF YOU SAY IT IS [xy] [xy] xy ___ The poem appeared as graffiti underneath an overpass in Switzerland which I noticed while I was traveling through last summer. I immediately wrote down the equation and carried it with me back to the states. I knew I wanted to do something with it I was obsessed by its simplicity and romanced by its cryptic message, which I believe all graffiti to hold (as in the words of the prophets are written on the subway walls Simon and Garfunkel). Six months later, I gave it a title that encompassed my feelings about the work. The title is lifted from a Wallace Stevens poem of the same name. |
