AQHA REINING PATTERN NUMBER 1 Official Handbook of the American Quarter Horse Association, 1977 The most often used pattern for a reining horse seems to be Pattern No. 1 in the Official Handbook of the American Quarter Horse Association. There are five patterns in all, and any contestant in the reining event should find out and learn the pattern called for in his chosen show, and keep current with the rules. As in dressage tests, the reining patterns grow progressively more difficult—that is, reining pattern No. 5 asks for double spins and for specific leads and circles to show the superior training and experience of the advanced reining horse.
