The Yearbook of Agriculture: 1954, Marketing. United States Department of Agriculture. More than one-tenth of the eggs produced on farms in the United States, about 25 percent of the chickens (exclusive of broilers), and 1 percent of the turkeys are used on the farms that produce them. There is also a considerable production of nonfarm—backyard—chickens and eggs, estimated at about one-tenth of that produced on farms. Most of this backyard output probably is eaten by the families producing it, or, if it is marketed, it is delivered to the consumer though simple and direct marketing channels.
