With sensuous and sonic diction, the poems in Hand-Held Executions explore the dark edges of psychological truth. Providing a context for the poems, Ms. Houlihan's first five critical essays in the Boston Comment series, already known by many through Web del Sol and Arts and Letters Daily, are also collected here.

    Joan Houlihan edits Perihelion, an online poetry magazine. Her column, The Boston Comment, appears regularly on Web del Sol and Arts and Letters Daily. She is author of The Mending Worm, winner of the 2005 Green Rose Award for a second book from New Issues Press and her work appears in such journals as Boston Review, Contemporary Poetry Review, Harvard Review, Pleidaes, The Gettysburg Review, Poetry International, Fulcrum, Passages North, Columbia: A Journal of Literature and Arts, Gulf Coast, VOLT and is anthologized in the Iowa Anthology of New American Poetries (University of Iowa Press, December 2004).

    Ms. Houlihan is founding director of the Concord Poetry Center in Concord, Massachusetts.
