One of the joys of reading genre fiction is in seeing how individual writers use, manipulate and challenge conventions. In "The Open Lift" Tobias Seamon takes up the standard British-style detective tale and carves almost everything away from the story but the conventions, with the following marvelous result. It's like a ham rendered down to half a cup of rich, rich stock.
