Black Beauty's dream
The night behind, the day before, the sea beneath
mouth seared, eyes overwhelmed, I descended.
Men told me to wander, to lead them
to the place I knew, the path of sky
and I did not question. I wanted
solitude, my heart bucked
as they tied the goats to me
who were unwilling, who screamed.
They bade me lie down.
A healed god; an Eye.
I watched them sprinkle the body
with water. I saw the coupling
flash of a knife
the careful distribution of the parts.
My head became sweetness
and I taught them honey.
Lost in a forest, in the haze
I heard myself nicker -
Come here, here
And I followed.
