Submission Guidelines

General

  • We do NOT accept unsolicited e-mail submissions.
  • We read submissions year-round, though our response time is slower in the summer. The average response time for submissions is between 2 and 4 months. If you have not received a response after 4 months (excepting the summer), send a query and SASE through the mail, or email us at <bwr@ua.edu>, and we'll check on the status of your submission.
  • Unsolicited manuscripts will not be returned unless accompanied by a self-addressed, stamped envelope (SASE) and proper postage.
  • Please do not mix genres in the same envelope.
  • We encourage you to read Black Warrior Review before submitting. Sample issues are available for $10; one-year subscriptions for $16.
  • Simultaneous submissions are fine, if noted (please notify us immediately if the work is accepted somewhere else).

Fiction

  • Limit of 7500 words. Send query for longer works. We are open to all styles; most important to us is quality of work. Include only one story per envelope (sending more than one short-short per envelope is fine). Please don't submit again until you've gotten a response. We generally only consider novel excerpts from novels already completed and contracted for publication.

Poetry

  • Limit poetry submissions to seven poems.

Non-Fiction

  • We consider creative personal essays and lyric essays. We do not typically publish academic articles.

Art

  • For cover art and portfolios, please send prints.

Comics

  • For comics, please send prints.

Interviews

  • Occasionally, we do print interviews if they are highly engaging. Query or send full interview mss.

Rights

  • All rights reserved. All rights revert to the author upon publication.

Payment

  • Black Warrior Review pays a one-year subscription, and up to $150 for prose and $75 for poems, depending on availability of funds.
