Guidelines

Web Del Sol, in conjunction with the editors of 5_Trope and Brevity, is happy to be sponsoring the world's first Bi-Annual Creative NonQuiction competition, open to writers everywhere. Read the brief guidelines below (being brief is what this is all about), then submit your best work.

What is a Creative NonQuiction?

Simply put: Creative Non-Fiction that's very quick -- 250 words or less. Creative Nonfiction can be memoir or journalism, serious or quirky, but always includes intimate detail and uses language in the same ways a poet or fiction writer might. See Brevity for some examples that exceed the word limit for this contest. Any style is acceptable, and writers are encouraged to experiment -- but remember, the piece must be based on fact and truth. Have fun.

Do you really mean 250 words or less?

Darn tootin', we do.

Can I send more than one Creative NonQuiction?

Yes. In fact, the $5 entry fee allows you to enter two short pieces. If you want to enter more than two, however, you will need to send an additional $5 entry fee for every two additional submissions.

What will I win?

Web Del Sol guarantees a first prize of $250. Note, however: ALL ENTRY FEES WILL BE INCLUDED IN THE FINAL AWARD PACKAGE. Half of all entry fees collected will go to the overall winner, 35% to the second prize winner, and 15% to the 3rd prize winner -- so the prize might be bigger than any of us expect. Winning entries will be published -- in both 5_Trope and Brevity; and the winners will be announced and linked from the Web Del Sol homepage.

Who will judge?

Joel Chace, poetry editor for 5_Trope, and Dinty W. Moore, editor of Brevity, will share those duties. Neither of these gentlemen or members of their immediate families or their editorial staff are eligible to win the prize. Excluded also from participation are all editors at Web Del Sol.

Is there a deadline?

Yes, all entries must be submitted before March 1, 1999.

What else do I need to know?

  • Submissions should be single spaced, 10 font and centered on the page, if possible. One submission per page.

  • Contest entries will not be returned; however, writer's permission will be sought should the editors of Brevity, 5_Trope, or WDS wish to publish work submitted as a result of the contest. This does not include works submitted by the prize winners.

  • Contestants must include their email address for notification purposes, and in order to receive info regarding future contests, events, and literary news.

  • Web Del Sol, Brevity, and 5_Trope will NOT provide contestant's email addresses or any other personal information to other parties including but not limited to individuals, webzines, marketing firms, or print magazines.

  • Feel free to write the editors if you have further questions. WDS can be reached at this mail address.

Where do I send my entry?

Each entry must be accompanied by a $5 contest entry fee, and must be mailed to:
