Mission
As an independent, community-based literary magazine, published
quarterly on the World Wide Web and annually in print,Painted Bride Quarterly's
main agenda is to support regional and emerging artists. But no regional
writing community can be viewed without a context: therefore, PBQ continues to
bring to the forefront of the literary scene the best established and emerging
local writers together with their peers from across the country and around the
world. The philosophy of the magazine is not to limit itself in terms of voice,
school or genre; in fact, both the local and national writers PBQ has published
over the last two decades extend from the most traditional to language school
explorations. What we feel is important is that the work best represents the
individual voice, however traditional or exploratory it may be. PBQ's print
annual is distributed nationally; our subscription base is international. All
work is read and discussed by the editorial board, and directly solicited work
is given no preference over unsolicited work. Authors whose work is accepted
for publication receive two copies of PBQ plus a 1 year subscription. Copyright
reverts to authors upon publication.
Painted
Bride Quarterly is supported in part by the English Department
at Rutgers University Camden and by grants from The National Endowment for the
Arts and the Pennsylvania Council for the Arts

History
Painted Bride Quarterly saw its first issue in 1973, culminating a year
of planning by its founding editors, Louise Simons and R. Daniel Evans. PBQ
became its own non-profit corporation in 1977. The magazine has increased in
size and production quality over the last twenty years. PBQ has been staffed by
local writers, critics, and editors whose driving passion has been to ensure a
sophisticated forum for the highest quality work such a forum could attract.
Each member of the staff, past and present, serves as a custodian of this
ideal, striving to make the best magazine possible. The staff is currently
composed of local writers, poets, critics, teachers, editors, and film makers.
Artists of all genres find a forum in PBQ. The magazine encourages and
publishes many translations as well as artwork from a variety of visual
artists. The artwork often provides a context for the work of the issue in
which it is featured, and its publication is another way for PBQ to test the
boundaries of the literary journal.
